Zagreb has been the capital of Croatia since its independence in 1991. It is located in the northwest of the country, between the Sava River and the southern slopes of Mount Medvednica, about 122 above sea level.
The historic center of the city, the upper town or Gornji grad, the lower town or Donji grad and Kapol, are the main attractions, made up of historic buildings, the cathedral, churches, institutions, restaurants, cafes, etc. Access to the streets and squares can be done on foot from Ban Jelačić Square.
Among its most important buildings are the Cathedral, the Church of San Marcos in the upper city, the Stone Gate, the Dolac Market and Ban Jelačić Square.
