Tirana is the capital and largest city of Albania. It is located in the western center of the country surrounded by hills with the Dajti mountain in the east and a light valley opening in the northwest with views of the Adriatic Sea in the distance. It is the center of cultural, economic and governmental activity in the country. With a population of approximately 800,000, it is one of the largest cities on the Balkan Peninsula.
Tirana was founded as a city in 1614 by Sulejman Pasha, although the area has been continuously inhabited since ancient times. It was named the capital of Albania after its independence in 1912.
