Itinerary description

Coastal tour from Palmones to Zahara de los Atunes in 4 days. 3rd day: Tarifa-Playa de Bolonia
This stage runs through the Natural Park of the Strait.
We start from the entrance to the walled enclosure of the city of Tarifa, which gives way to the old town. We walk through its narrow streets, in the direction of the sea. At its southwestern end, is the castle of Guzmán "the good", from the Caliphate period (s. X), although, very reformed later. We make a stop at "Lo de Juan", and, with the energy provided by a good breakfast, we go to the island of the Palomas. On our way, we pass by some bunkers crowned by the Castle of Santa Catalina, built at the beginning of the century. XX and in the current state of abandonment.
The artificial isthmus that makes up the island of Pigeons has a special attraction: on the one hand, we are at the southernmost point of continental Europe. On the other hand, it serves as a divide of two seas, the Mediterranean Sea, to the east, and the Atlantic Ocean, to the west, and of two continents, Europe and Africa. Can you ask for more? This island, of great ecological value, was occupied by the army for many years until recently its management was transferred to the municipality of Tarifa, which currently organizes guided tours.
The island of the Palomas represents the destination (or starting point) of two of the great European GRs: the GR-92 "European Mediterranean Arch Trail", which runs along the entire Spanish Mediterranean coast and connects with the E12, which comes from Croatia, and the GR-145 "European Atlantic Arch Trail", which comes from Estonia. It is precisely the latter, the one that we are going to follow for a stretch, first, along the promenade of Tarifa that, later, becomes wooden walkways (in not in very good condition) that run parallel to the very long beach of Los Lances. A good part of this beach is declared as a Natural Park by the Government of Andalusia.
When the catwalk ends, we take some paths that connect with the "Río Jara" campsite. These paths are usually half flooded and with a lot of mud. In addition, they are interrupted by the Salado stream that has to be sailed by a bridge in poor condition for whose access it is necessary to bypass a fence. Therefore, I recommend as the best option to continue to the road and make this section, to the campsite, on the shoulder of the road, following the GR-145.
Once at the campsite, we approach the shore of Los Lances beach by a lane and crossing a dilaid bridge over the Jara River. At the end of the beach, it is difficult to continue along the coastline due to the waves, so, after some turns and revolts, we travel this section, to the next sandy area, along the banks of the road. This gives us the opportunity to contemplate the majestic watchtower of the Peña, whose dating is unknown, but which could be from the s. XIII.
Again on the beach, we walk through the coves that make up the tip of the Peña to the beach of Valdevaqueros and its spectacular dune. As is known, Valdevaqueros is known worldwide for windsurfing and kitesurfing. Observing the experts is these sports surfing the waves, with their chilling jumps, is a delight.
The beach of Valdevaqueros culminates in Punta Paloma, giving rise to a whole series of beautiful coves up to the beach of Bolonia. Some of the coves are created by flysch that form backwaters of waters known as "the natural pools of Bologna". There are small trails that connect one cove with another, so traffic is not too difficult, especially if you wear the right footwear. In the area, bunkers built after the Civil War abound.
The beach of Bologna, with its famous dune, has the population center of El Lentiscal, belonging to the T. M. of Tarifa. This nucleus has grown a lot in recent times, due to the increase in tourism, so there are many accommodation options (although in summer, they are not usually cheap). Restaurant establishments have also grown considerably, but the restaurant "Las Rejas" continues to take the cake. From a cultural point of view, it is very worthwhile to visit the Roman archaeological site of "Baelo Claudia", one of the most important in Andalusia. Admission is free. If you find it closed, for coming outside opening hours, you can always see it from its perimeter.
