Itinerary description

Circular tour of the Ortegícar mountain range (Málaga), with English version
It will have happened to many of us. We are going by car from Malaga, on the way to Ronda, and at the height of Cañete La Real, we can't help but look at the huge limestone mass that rises to our left. This is the Sierra de Ortegícar. We wonder what it will be like to go through it. Today I decided to do it.
Walking through the mountains of Ortegícar is not easy. There are hardly any paths or roads. It is a huge stony ground, with loose stones and lapiaces difficult to travel, a breaker-legs in every way. Some areas are also impenetrable, due to the abundance of scrub.
The mountain range is accessed from the town of Serrato, constituted as an independent municipality a few years ago, after being segregated from Ronda. We take the road that connects Serrato with the Burgo and, a few kilometers away, a wide lane on the left that descends to the Cerezo stream. We cross the creek and head towards the cortijo de los Rompedizos. The lane is in good condition, so any vehicle can reach the same farmhouse to park nearby. I decided, however, to leave it a little earlier, at this point: https://maps.app.goo.gl/Pv5ofPaZ6m4aTDNH8? G_st=ic
I began to walk along the lane, passed the aforementioned farmhouse and continued along the lane surrounding the mountain range at its base until I was at the foot of a chimney. Following tracks found in wikiloc, I ventured to climb to the upper part of the sierra through that slot. This is the most technical part of the route and the reason why I qualify this route as DIFFICULT, since the chimney is very vertical and requires several climbs of some consideration. Therefore, this is only suitable for those who move well in ascents on rocks and do not suffer from vertigo. If that is the case, it is best to continue the lane and go up to the mountains later, for a more leaning part. The exit of the chimney places us on the top square of the mountain range, from which you can see, in the distance, the geodesic vertex. Instead of heading directly towards it, I decided to go through the entire massif, following its outline, in order to explore it properly. I headed north, going down to a repopulation pine forest and going back up to try to crown the hills of the northern end of the mountain range, known as the Cancho de Enmedio. It was not a good idea, since the higher parts of these hills are covered with very dense scrub that prevents access. This area has, however, the attraction of being able to visit an old snowfield. I went back to the pine forest, which is crossed by a lane that allows access to the mountains from the northeast. I directed my steps towards the hill of the Mojón, at its east end, and that can be easily crowned. From there, crossing the cancho de la Graceja, I reached the geodesic of the Sierra, which, with its 962 m.a.s.l., is the highest point. The views are fabulous. I turned towards the Escribano hill, the second height of the mountain range. On all this slope, it is where the most vertical pits are located, and, therefore, where some climbing routes are located. I continued contouring the edges of the mountain range to the extreme south, from which you can see, below, the cortijo de los Rompedizos. From this point on, I started the descent through some loose rock courts, taking extreme precautions not to slip, although, being careful, without too many problems. Before reaching the farmhouse, I deviated to the left through a pine forest, looking for the point where I had parked the vehicle to complete the circular route.
In the vicinity of the mountains, there are two archaeological elements that are worth visiting. It is the Arab tower of Ortegícar, dated between the 12th to the 14th centuries and the Nasrid bridge that is located in its vicinity, of the same period and origin. Both places are indicated on the track, in two waypoints. The tower is located inside a private farmhouse, so it can only be observed from the outside.
