Itinerary description

Such a lovely trail so close to home!

Though you drive through high-end homes to get to the trailhead, this trail quickly leaves behind the "cacophony of urbananity" as you ascend & descend gentle rolling hills rimming the west side of the North Fork American River before it flows into Folsom Lake.

This is quite an easy hike but I gave it a moderate rating because of the trail surface and slight elevation gain.

Tip: Next time, I will use the bathroom down at the boat ramp parking area, then drive back up to the Horse Staging parking lot to park and start the hike as the trail starting from the Horse Staging area is much more friendly. The other trailhead at the boat ramp is perfectly fine but very steep and rutted with loose ball-bearing gravel underfoot.

A view of Folsom Lake, thru the beautiful fall foliage, from our trail high above. The water is very low due to preparation for winter rains and snow melt. The moss rock was splendid due to recent rains.

Mormon Ravine Falls

Make sure to continue around the PG&E Newcastle Power Plant to continue on the trail to Mormon Ravine Falls just a few hundred yards ahead. Once at the falls, take the short trail to the aluminum silo, stand on the metal landing, then look the big boulder directly in front of you about 15 ft. You can see a huge "turn-buckle" still moored to it!
