We took the bus to the ferry terminal to take the ferry from Rangitoto Island at 9:15. Rangitoto is a nature reserve where all invasive and harmful mammals have been eradicated and some species of birds have been reintroduced. The island is actually an extinct volcano, formed in the 15th century. So we arrived on the island shortly before 10am, and then we started walking. On the first 300 meters, we skirted the coastline through the mangrove (photos 1, 2 and 6). In addition, at the edge of the water, there are also halophilic plants (photo 3) and oysters (photo 4). Then we chose to climb to the top of the old crater by a path that crosses multiple lava flows. It is a very good example of the recolonization of the flows by the plants. After about an hour of walking, we forked left on a wide path.
