Itinerary description
This is one of the best hikes in Serbia, but no-one knows about it. It's not difficult, has great views and has great historical/cultural components that add to the enjoyment.
The hike consists of three parts: 1) Walk to the unexcavated Roman fort, 2) Walk to the viewpoint rock, 3) walk through the sandy landscape, which is similar to what you find just across the other side of the Danube at Deliblato Sands.
As you hike you can explore - you can find lots of cool things at the Roman fort like bricks, stone foundations and parts of urns. Remember to leave them there - it is illegal to take them. When you get to the viewpoint you will have great views into Romania as well as Serbia. Some people think this place was a sacred site to the pre-Roman peoples, the celts. Let your mind wander as you think of the strategic importance of the site, overlooking the Danube's widest point, and how it was used by different civilisations over thousands of years. Finally, as you walk on the sandy soils heading to the hike's end point, you can go back even further in time. Presumably this sand comes from the disappearance of the ancient Pannonian Sea?
You can make this hike longer by starting at Ram Fort, but each time I have done this hike I visit the fort first, then just drive to the start point.
If you do this hike May-August, you will see less of the Roman fort, because it will be very overgrown. But you will have wildflowers. And you will know roughly where it is because it's clear on the satellite map.
We recorded this hike in November - starting at 11:45 am and finishing at 4:00pm. Sunset is 4:15 - so very achievable during the part of the year with less daylight hours.
