At the beginning of the trail, from Lake Rotoiti, there is a quite steep slope in the rainforst (first photo). After about half an hour, the slope eases and the rainforest is replaced by a blackberry wood for a short moment. The berries are delicious but the road is long lol. Follow the track with concentration, it does not really look like a pathway in some places. Soon, you will be in a flat pathway, inside the pristine rainforest (see photo 2). After about 1 more hour, the path starts to go down in a streambed. Follow the path in the streambed, 15 minutes later, you'll be in a spell of crater, with blackberries again (photo 3). Follow the path until you're up for 10 minutes (Photo 4), 10 minutes later.
You should count 1h20min each way.

We started the Rongomai track near the shores of Lake Rotoiti. There is parking on the side of the road. This path began with a steep climb with a few times the view of the tree ferns opposite. A little higher than the parking, we arrive on a forest of brambles. The berries of brambles are edible. At this point, there are several intersections that lead to dead ends. To stay on the Rongomai track, follow the orange triangle markers. We return very quickly in a lush rainforest and the slope is less important. We can admire the tree ferns that go up to the canopy, the ferns and some epiphytic bromeliads, the mosses, the lichens on the trees, the trees with the intense black bark ... Above that, we hear the sound of crickets and forest birds. Then we descended a slope in the middle of a forest of tree ferns that dominate the canopy. At the end of this descent, we arrived at the bottom of an extinct volcanic crater. The bottom of the crater is invaded by brambles. A last small climb to the other side of the wall and we arrive on another road. It was a walk of 4km and 1h30, we retraced our steps after having lunch around noon. The return took us 1:10.
