Itinerary description

The Raheenleagh Wind Farm.
We did this walk during a visit to the Woodenbridge Hotel for a family waling event. The gate through which we entered (see photo) is about a 15-minute drive from the hotel on the Ballinvalley road. I had planned to do this walk on a previous visit, but we had to cancel due weather conditions. Raheenleagh is a wind energy project owned by the Electrical Generating company and the state organisation that operates the Raheenleagh forest, which became operational in 2016. The 11 Siemens turbines are very impressive with the height to tip of blade: 133m. There are three easy walking trails measuring a total of 15km, that take an hour and a quarter to two hours to complete. They are suitable for family groups including young children, and some mobility challenged people. The walk is mainly made up of service roads. We intended to take a narrow pathway from the Waypoint marked “Turn Back” which would have eliminated the need to return by the same track. It is possible to continue along this path (by climbing a fence) but one of our party refused to walk through this overgrown pathway. It is a lovely walk and has some spectacular views of the surrounding area of Wicklow.
