How to get to the June 2015 lava flow:
This is the lava field section (part 2) of Pu'u O'o / Captain's trail!
You FIRST must take the muddy Captain's Trail 3 to 4 miles before you can get on the lava field. If you are looking at my trails Captain's Trail is listed as Fern Forest Trail.
You must hike Captains Trail 3.5 miles then this the lava field section and then the Captain's Trail again for a total of somewhere between 10-15 miles total for the day.
YOU MUST TAKE A GPS AND USE IT. If you are out on the lava field and the fog rolls in you will NEVER find your way back to the captains trail without GPS. The terrain is constantly changing from lava vs forest. Be smart these trails are not for idiots.
These trails are closed for good reason. If caught or injured be prepared to get fined.
Is it worth it to cook dinner on lava?..... YES
