Itinerary description
Attempt to reach the summit of the mountain Puthuq K'usi close to Machu Picchu, Peru. The trail starts from the train trails just outside Machu Picchu Pueblo (Aguas calientes). The inkan stone stairs are soon obstructed by a massive landslide. Climb over it (50 m, easy) and find the stairs again. A few meters further up one gets to a vertical part of rock with a liana and thin wooden sticks in drilled holes. This part of the climb is possible but further up is a part that isn't recommendable without safety gear. We went down at this part and took an alternative trail left from the beginning of the stairs. This way you climb up on roots and exposed, loose and slippery terrain. After a traverse to the left the trail gets smaller and an exposed downclimb on loose earth. We decided to go back from this point on.
From this assessment the most promising approach would be to return with some safety gear (30 m rope, some slings and carabiners) and climb up the vertical Incan stairs. Go early as this might cost some time.
