Itinerary description

Start at the Puponga Farm car park and follow the inland farm track to Green Hills Beach. Take a small side detour to the top of the ridge (sign posted) and get a great view of one of the pretty lakes and Mt Lunar. Carry on down the farm track to the signposted turn off to Green Hills beach. Follow the track down through the coastal bush to Green Hills Creek. Wade across the creek to the beach and explore. You are quite likely to be the only person/people on the beach.
Then re-cross the creek at the eastern end of the beach and climb the sandbank , then walk east across the headland to Bridge Beach at the western end of Wharariki Beach. Great views along Wharariki beach to the Archway Islands when crossing the headland. Note this section of the walk is off track and not signposted but it is easy to follow the contours of the land for 300 meters and come out safely at the other end. If in doubt retrace your path back onto the inland farm track and walk back until you find the signposted track down to Bridge Beach.
Once on bridge beach follow the beach around the rocks and headland until you get to Wharariki Beach proper. Note this route may not be possible at or near high tide - again you might have to retrace your route back up to the inland farm track. There are lots of fantastic rock formations and rock pools which are often occupied by seals. Give any adult seals you find a wide berth and try not to get between them and the sea as they may run you over !
Explore Wharariki Beach especially the 'breathing' rock caves at the eastern end, before climbing the sand dunes back to the track and the car park. Note - most visitors head straight to Wharariki Beach via this track and it can get very crowded at this end of the beach which makes the extra effort to get to Green Hills Beach well worth it!
