Itinerary description

This recording is a variation of the popular Protea Trail (marked as Blue on the official reserve map) in the Helderberg Nature Reserve in Somerset West. The trail is mostly on gravel Jeep track with a few short sections or shortcuts on single track footpath. The trail is generally easy for any reasonably experienced hiker but take note that the compacted gravel can be slippery on the Jeep track, this is the only obstacle so take it slow and cautiously especially when descending and after rain. The trail is scenic with diverse flora, and the veld is recovering nicely from the recent fires. It offers sweeping views of Somerset West, Strand, False Bay, Gordons Bay and the Hottentots Holland Range as the much higher backdrop behind. On a clear day, sightline views to Cape Point and the mountains in the Kogelberg area are clearly visible and easily distinguishable. The trail starts out at the parking area near the Basil Maskew Miller Herbarium and Visitor Interpretive Center before proceeding though the reserve gate and splitting at the White- Eye Walk intersection, following the path the recording splits again following the Siskin Walk over a bridge. Following the Siskin path for a while the trail then meets the Jeep track further up and then heads up the well signed Blue Protea Route or Trail. Descending a shortcut was chosen to avoid the slippery lower section of the Protea Jeep track. The trail then follows the conventional route down and back to the parking lot. Overall, it’s a good straightforward trail with little to no technical sections or exposure to heights. It can be attempted by almost the whole family, but unfit individuals may find the path rather steep and unrelenting. Be sure to pack water as well as sunscreen on a hot day. Helderberg Nature Reserve is well managed with access controlled and security present. There is an entrance fee for individuals and vehicles entering the reserve and Wild Cards do not receive free entry, only reserve members are allowed to enter free of charge. At the time of writing the reserve had card and cash options to enter, R30 per adult and R20 per vehicle. Students, Pensioners and Children get further discount. It will be best to consult the reserve’s website for the latest prices or call to confirm the latest charges if you are unsure.
