Itinerary description
A good walk through some fascinating scenery and interesting history. Starting from the outskirts of Prilep we park near the famous Slon (elephant) stone and visit Markovi Kuli - King Marko's towers, the remains of a medieval fortress on a prominent hill overlooking Prilep. There's plenty of ruins and rocks to explore here before heading off along a well marked path along the sides of a ridge towards the prominent peak of Zlatovrv. Nestled at the base of the summit rocks is the beatiful, though sadly in need of much restoration monastery of Treskavec. The route from Markovi Kuli to Treskavec is easy going on a good path, with a spring part way along to stock up on water supplies. There is a short steep rock slab section to climb, with a steel cable to guide the way, but it is a lot easier than it looks. Technical difficulty of the main route is therefore 'easy'. However, if you attempt to climb Zlatovrv as I did, the difficulty rises to 'moderate' as some exploration and simple rock scrambling is required. I was unable to find a route to the summit in the time available but got within 10 metres of it, on a wide rocky ledge with a silver birch tree and an awesome view! I would be interested to hear if anyone knows where the route to the top goes. I think it is from this ledge somewhere. I explored briefly from the back of the peak but couldn't find a way up this way.

Hi Wulfrunian,
Somebody from a Macedonian Mountain club once drew the trail to Zlatov Vrv for me on Google Earth. I overlay the files and it seems you reached the same point as he draw. If you send me your email i will send the files to you...Still have to do it myself one day!
Cheers,
Dennis

fascinating landscape and well marked from Markovi Kuli to Trescavez monestary, one spring with drinking water on the way
we made the tour in August, when it was restricted to walk through forests because of the high risk of wood fires
As the trail leads almost completely through open grassland it was quite hot, but nevertheless worth it
