Itinerary description
***English below***
ENGLISH
Starting point: The church of Agios Georgios at the highestpoint on the Koula to Psarades road
Trail in a nutshell: A trail of two parts. The first leg takes you through the trees along a ridge-back rising high above Koula. It passes some ruins and fortifications; the last strongholds of the leftist forces in the Greek Civil War. Beyond the ruins of Agia Varvara you may turn back to your starting point or climb higher to the top of Mt Devas, which has grandstand views all round.
Why is it so special?
A grove of ancient junipers around the church of Agios Georgios.
Forest cover of a kind very rare in Greece, with a rich understory and ground cover.
Flora. This is truly a trail for plant-lovers armed with a good field guide and plenty of time, particularly if walked in May or early June.
Defensive positions dating from the Greek Civil War.
A view over the pelican colonies in Vromolimni (Viro) and adjacent reedbeds of Lake Lesser Prespa.
An interesting butterfly, the Clouded Apollo Parnassius mnemosyne and ‘hill-topping’ by blue butterflies.
