Itinerary description

Easy trail exploring the volcanic peninsula of Monte Brasil and its military fortifications (Fortaleza S. João Baptista) dating back to the time of Spanish rule.
Official walking trail with description available under
https://trails.visitazores.com/en/trails-azores/terceira/monte-brasil
Trail does not present particular difficulties, a good option to do when weather does not invite hiking in the higher parts of Terceira. There are downhill sections on bare rock faces, which may be slippery when wet, under these wet conditions trail should probably be ranked as "Moderate".
Currently (October 2021) the above web site states that the trail is closed, don't know for what reason, maybe after bad weather, take care.

For those interested in the military history of Fortaleza S. João Baptista, much more detailed info than available, e.g., on Wikipedia can be obtained from the Portuguese Ministry of Defence (mostly in Portuguese)
