Itinerary description
Official walking trail PRC02 GRA, waymarked red-yellow, description of which and GPS coordinates can also be downloaded from
https://trails.visitazores.com/en/trails-azores/graciosa/volta-caldeira-furna-do-enxofre
While you walk around the Caldeira de Graciosa outside below its rim, the highlights of this trail are initially the very rewarding views over the coast of Graciosa and the 4 neighbouring islands of the Central Group, Terceira, São Jorge, Pico and Faial (weather permitting...).
The Caldeira de Graciosa is only to be overlooked from a viewpoint later in the walk, and then accessed through a road tunnel. Various volcanic caves of different sizes can be visited.
Apart from excursions to visit the caves and the viewpoint over the Caldeira, the trail is entirely on roads and dirt roads and presents no particular difficulties, hence can be classified as "easy". The "miradouros" along the road circling the caldeira were newly inaugurated in 2020 and provide good spots to sit and have a picnic, except that they have hardly any shade.
The trailhead is near the bus stop "Praia - Caminho de Cima Caldeira", which can be reached in the morning by bus from Stª Cruz and Praia (at time of walking in 2020, buses left Stª Cruz Mon-Fri 7:30 and 8:30, Sat 8:30, bus back to Praia and Stª Cruz Mon-Fri APPROXIMATELY 17:30).
Our trail time includes a 40 min picnic break and a 40 min visit to "Furna do Enxofre", total walking time hence ~3:45 h.
