Itinerary description
Official trail PRC01 TER Mistérios Negros waymarked red-yellow, a description can be found at
https://trails.visitazores.com/en/trails-azores/terceira/misterios-negros
The trail is rated as "difficult", and I agree with that (keeping in mind that ratings of the PR and PRC TER trails are for the average walking tourist). A large part of it requires physical agility, e.g. the ability to move under low-hanging branches, or climb over tree roots, and a safe step. If you don't have that, it bears the risk of injury. Also, a large backpack may in certain sections increase the effort to maneuver around the trees.
We found the trail quite well maintained, and did it after a rainy night. In the first half, which runs through the endemic forest, muddy stretches are generally well covered by wooden logs. On the contrary, in the second half which partially runs through an open forest, you may encounter muddy stretches where you have to wade through. No problem, though, with proper walking shoes, but I would not like to do it in sneakers.
Apparently there are people that manage to do this in 1.5 h, but we also met some 16y-old locals that needed 3.5 h.

No clue what purpose the electronic gadget on the little pillar serves. Could be that it measures how many people pass through this location on the trail?

Beautiful trail. Some parts are physically and technically demanding, but you'll be fine as long as you wear a proper pair of hiking boots or shoes. Might be interesting to climb up to Pico Gaspar or have lunch at Lagoa das Patas, just slightly off the track.
Thank you for your comment, quite appropriate. Yes, we were a bit lazy, so skipped Pico Gaspar. A diversion to Lagoa das Patas would add about 5 km extra to the circular walk, diverting to the right before waypoint "All yellow", then mostly on dirt roads and roads, joining again at waypoint "View to Pico Gaspar".
