Itinerary description
ACCOMMODATION at CH Hotel, very good breakfast from 7am, good rooms with safe and area for briefing.
TAXI to Labruge beach organized by TT for 8.30am, drivers meet us at hotel reception. Takes between 30-45m depending on traffic.
TRACK
Labruge beach has two cafés and Camino track starts right near roundabout café.
very flat and easy walk with lots of walk boards along the sea. Quite a few cafes and restaurants throughout and well populated.
Once arriving into VC and at the end of crossing bridge, there are two routes: straight ahead (which is the coastal Camino) or turning left into Praça da República which is the one recorded here (litoral). So if a nice day take this one otherwise take the other one. Walked all the way along the Av.Banhos/Marginal until arriving to hotel but only saw one shell/arrow just before turning right to hotel.
Nice lunch at Vila do Conde in front of garden where replica of a 16th century ship is found. At same café place we had lunch in June but this time gipsy girl was very efficient and serving good sandwiches and hamburgers and everyone was happy. However, walking a bit further and after the ship, there were 2 or 3 restaurants that were grilling grilled fish, octopus, etc. in case you opt for a proper meal.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Vila do Conde is one of the oldest settlements, in northern Portugal. Its origins are beyond the foundation of the Portuguese territory, dating back to the year 953. Particularly during the sixteenth century, Vila do Conde reached its commercial and maritime heyday with shipbuilding, strongly linked to the Discoveries.
- It has tradition of quilts of rags, wool sweaters, and the secular bobbin lace (lace textile made by braiding and twisting lengths of thread, which are wound on bobbins).
- Monastery of Santa Clara, it was founded in 1318 with Gothic features.
- Church of Vila do Conde Matrix (Igreja de São João Baptista), ate Gothic buildings with Manueline, Baroque, neo-Gothic elements, has a Latin cross plan with three naves, transept (with two chapels) and protruding head. Its construction, five hundred, suffered a major boost with the passage of Manuel by Vila do Conde in 1502, the quadrangular bell tower was built in 1573.
ACCOMMODATION at Hotel Costa Verde, Póvoa de Varzim, good rooms with safe but need to ask lock from reception.
DINNER at restaurant next door between 7.30-8pm, but need to check by 7pm re one table to sit all.(grumpy daughter) In June we had nice grilled sea bass but this time meal was pretty average with choice of grilled chicken breast, filetes de pescada, or steak with mushrooms, ALL served with rice and french fries!!! Wine served on jars.
