Itinerary description
A 7.5 km circular trail starting / finishing at the Igreja Matriz de São Romão in Alferce.
Includes a little difficult 1 km detour (steep climb up, and back) and requires some physical condition and good footwear ... to see the stunning views over the Monchique mountains, and the ruined area of the Islamic castle of Alferce (a large pile of stones, don't expect to find a castle), where archaeologists appear to be starting an excavation.
On walking back Down from the castle to the trail there is a nice spot for a picnic with good views (tables), before taking the wooden Steps down to the Suspension bridge, to cross the Ribeira de Monchique, and continue up the other side of the valley ... providing some great views.
A great improvement from the old original trail and well worth seeing this construction.
A small bar in the village was open for a little refreshment after the walk.
Recommend following the trail this direction because of the amount of climbing.
Rated 4 /5
Moderate - because of the climb to the Castelo.
