Itinerary description
Starting in the village of Vila Verde, next to the Mother Church, this circular trail incorporates a section of Roman road and heads to the remains of the Castro da Cerca, an old fortified settlement that is believed to have been used by the Romans.
I chose this route due to its short distance as I was accompanied by my grandson (11 years old). Whilst it has some elevation climbs, they are not too strenuous.
Unfortunately, part of the trail has become overgrown, making passage difficult. This occurs around the 3.4km mark, where the trail crosses the river next to the remains of an old bridge. The opposite bank is heavily overgrown with ferns. Beyond a large metal gate, the trail itself is heavily overgrown but the worst segment can be by-passed by walking along an adjacent field. However, when rejoining the trail it is partially overgrown with ferns, thorny brambles and Stinging Nettles. Care must be taken to avoid being scratched or stung. As the route ascends, the trail clears and can be enjoyed again. This overgrown segment spoils an otherwise enjoyable route.
