Itinerary description
PR2 Rota das Bétulas (Birch trail).
The municipality of São Pedro do Sul prepared this amazing trail through the mountains of Freita and Arada.
It starts in the Camping Site of Retiro da Fraguinha, headed towards Póvoa das Leiras, along this way one walks along a small river Paivó and in parallel of a small water course with plenty of little frogs.
Arriving next to the small Chappell of Póvoa das Leiras and crossing the little village one is transported to the past, with cattle breeders storing its cattle under the small granite or schists houses. Occasional crossing with cows and goats and sheep are all along the way.
This small village is surrounded by plenty of little terraces, matching the name ‘leiras’.
From Póvoa das Leiras we head towards Candal where along the way you cross with multiple small rivers with cute bridges. Many cows are also along the way sometimes without any care taker. Beware and don’t get to close, sometimes they get spooky.
Candal is also a small village full of small houses of gratine and schist.
From Candal you climb up the mountain of Freita for more than 400 mt up. It’s moderately demanding but the views over the terraces Póvoa das Leiras reward you :)
The rest of the path is a quasi semi-desert path full of rocks and not much vegetation at more than 1000 m altitude.
