Itinerary description
Este trilho que tem início e fim na estrada regional E.R.103 no Ribeiro Frio é o percurso mais fácil de ser percorrido em toa a Ilha. A Vereda dos Balcões é um percurso de 3 km (ida e volta) plano que acompanha a levada velha, no final chega-se a um miradouro com uma vista espetacular.
Ao longo do percurso são encontradas espécies indígenas e endémicas da Madeira, destacando-se as espécies arbóreas da família das Lauráceas: The Loureiro, Til, Vinhático and the Folhado.
Ao chegar ao Miradouro dos Balcões o caminhante deparar-se-á com um esplêndido cenário, totalmente coberto pelos vales verdejantes característicos da Floresta Laurissilva.
Deste Miradouro é observada a Central Hidroelétrica da Fajã da Nogueira, produzindo eletricidade com a água retida e abastecendo todo o Concelho de Santana.
Em dias de boa visibilidade, poderá ser avistada a Cordilheira Central da Ilha, destacando-se os dois picos mais altos, o Pico do Areeiro (1817m) e o Pico Ruivo (1861m), assim como a Penha D´Águia.
De regresso ao Ribeiro Frio pelo mesmo trilho, pode visitar o Parque Florestal do Ribeiro Frio, que integra o Centro Aquícola com o viveiro de trutas Arco-Íris.

This trail that starts and ends on the regional road E.R.103 in Ribeiro Frio is the easiest route to be taken around the island. The Vereda dos Balcões is a 3 km (round trip) flat trail that accompanies the Levada Velha, at the end you arrive at a viewpoint with spectacular views.
Along the way, indigenous and endemic species of Madeira are found, especially the tree species of the Lauráceas family: O Loureiro, Til, Vinhático and Folhado.
Upon arriving at the Balcões Viewpoint, the hiker will be faced with a splendid scenery, totally covered by the characteristic green valleys of the Laurissilva Forest.
From this viewpoint, the Fajã da Nogueira Hydroelectric Plant can be seen, producing electricity with the water retained and supplying the entire municipality of Santana.
On good visibility days, the Central Mountain Range of the Island can be seen, highlighting the two highest peaks, Pico do Areeiro (1817m) and Pico Ruivo (1861m), as well as Penha D´Águia.
Back to Ribeiro Frio on the same trail, you can visit the Ribeiro Frio Forest Park, which integrates the Aquaculture Center with the Arco-Íris trout pond.
