Itinerary description

From Hotel Waddenweelde in Pieterburen you can walk the first kilometers of the famous Pieterpad. In the Groningen polder you mainly walk along waterways to Winsum.

Picturesque Pieterburen
Before you go out Pieterburen, it is nice to have a look around this beautiful place. There are some beautiful buildings to see here, such as the Petruskerk from the first half of the fifteenth century and the Vier Winden, a corn and hulling mill from 1846. The Pieterburen Seal Center is of course also a well-known attraction. Just above Eenrum you come through the Oosterbos that was created in an exchange allotment in the early 1970s.

Wierde villages
Eenrum is one of the most beautiful seaweed villages in the Marne. It enjoys a protected village view, partly because of the thirteenth-century church, which is partly built from tuff. The beautiful Michaelkerk in Mensingeweer also dates from the thirteenth century. Hollands Welvaart is a flour mill from 1855. At the Winsumerdiep you can enjoy a terrace with a view of the water at the cozy Marenland Recreation. Your tour ends a little further on at Winsum Station.

Pieterpad
The Pieterpad (LAW 9) is the most famous long-distance walking route in the Netherlands. He will guide you from Pieterburen in Groningen to the Sint-Pietersberg in Limburg. The trail has a length of approximately 492 kilometers and is divided into 26 stages. The route gives you a beautiful view of the varied Dutch landscape. You will also pass through various historic towns. The path was designed by friends Toos Goorhuis-Tjalsma and Bertje Jens. They were dissatisfied with the lack of long-distance hiking trails in the Netherlands. From 1978 to 1983 they took many walks to plot the route. Existing paths were sometimes combined with new routes. The Pieterpad was officially opened in 1983.

Would you also like to walk the mudflats from Hotel Waddenweelde? Then walk route 519255 and book a mudflat walking package. Would you like to walk to Groningen from Marenland Recreation? Then walk route 530023.

Reading tip!
