Itinerary description
A walk on sandy roads through open farmland with a view to the mountains on the other side of the river Douro. Right before Escalhao there is an old roman bridge. You pass the pleasant little Village of Escalhão. Then it's down to the crossing of river Douro - first through a very pleasant landscape, then on main road. A nice and quiet walk along river Douro before the trail takes off into the mountains and up the mountain pass by the quite spectacular Calzada de Alpajares. You will pass the village of Poiares on the way to Freixo de Espada da Cinta.
