Itinerary description

Wandeling 22/06/2012

In the charming mountain town of Monchique we parked our car alongsides the N266, near the football field. Descend along the footbalfield through a pleasant green landscape with terrace farming and cork oak forests. From Brejo (last café on the track!) starts the climb to the Picota, second highest but most beautiful summit of the Algarve. Higher up we cross young Eucalyptus forests. Navigation is simple: some signposts to the Picota and if in doubt at junctions, just take the path that goes uphill. Two kilometers past Bemposta you can also follow the markings of the GR13 Via Algarviana. After Picota descend back down to Monchique. Walk on 22/06/2012.

Well marked trail. Great views from peak. Highly recommended.

In the summer of 2018, forest fires ravaged the area. I'am afraid that the beautiful eucalyptus forests were damaged if not destroyed.

I hope they will be destroyed because the eucalyptus trees - they are not naturally growing in Portugal but very fast growing - nice for the paper industry - are the dangerfor fires all over portugal

    Thank you for your comment.
As a visitor we enjoyed the beautifully wooded, shady slopes.
But indeed, the introduction of an exotic plant often has adverse consequences.
