Itinerary description
This hike is a variation of one I uploaded in November 2022. This walk is longer - especially if you go the whole way to Edwards Point, which I didn't this time, if you add that section then this is an approximately 20km walk.
The walk is pretty much entirely flat, and the only challenges are the sand walking at Edwards Point (which can be avoided to some extent by taking the trail parallel to the beach instead of walking along the beach), and the duration of the walk.
The scenery is coastal beach towns and salt lakes and wetlands at the nature reserve. Lots of water birds.
You start by taking the ferry from Docklands to Portarlington and end by taking a bus from the end point (which is the bus stop), into Geelong. The bus meanders and takes approximately 45 minutes. We got off before the station to have dinner in Geelong and then walked to Geelong station to take the train back to Melbourne. I think the bus goes the whole way to the station if you want to head home directly after the hike.
Of course this hike can be done in reverse, just keep in mind the bus is more frequent than the ferry. You need to book ferry tickets in advance from Port Phillip Ferries (https://www.portphillipferries.com.au) - so you would need to keep a closer eye on time if doing the trip in reverse. We saw seals on the ferry trip.
Enjoy!
