Port Erin - Calf Sound - Chasms - Port Erin 14 km

This beautiful, predominantly coastal walk with at times spectacular cliffs and sea views takes you from Port Erin to Calf Sound, on to the Chasms and back inland through heath land via Cregneash Folk Museum. Especially near the Chasms and the Sugarloaf you will find steep unfenced precipices, so guard children in these places. Do not forget your binoculars to observe the fulmars, seals, raven, choughs, kittiwakes and other birds on this walk. Hiking times: Port Erin-Calf Sound 1:20 h; Calf Sound-Chasms 1:15 h; Chasms-Cregneash (detour via public footpath) 0:50 h; Cregneash-Port Erin 0:35 h.
The walk starts on Shore Road in Port Erin directly on the beach, where you will find some parking spaces (maximum stay 15 hours) in front of public toilets. You walk towards Raglan Pier along the road along Port Erin Bay with excellent views of Bradda Head. Just before the end of the road you will find the Coastal Path (Raad ny Foillan), which takes you up and along the cliffs towards Calf Sound. Right at the start there is a cliff with nesting fulmars. Along this path you have excellent views towards Bradda Head on one side, and the Calf of Man on the other side. At Calf Sound, you will find a café, and several memorials (see waypoints), but most notable, a great view of the Calf of Man, Calf Sound with strong currents, and the small islet of Kitterland. On Kitterland and in the waters surrounding it you will see a lot of seals. You continue on Raad ny Foillan towards Spanish Head. Keeping close to the coast you also round Black Head and get your first glimpse of the Sugarloaf on the far side of Bay Stacka: a big sharp rock rising out of the sea with a kittiwake colony. The coast path takes you to the Chasms, where you will find deep fissures in the rocks: be careful here. From the Chasms you walk to a viewpoint above Sugarloaf, and then continue towards Port St Mary. After about 800 m you take a public footpath taking you back to the top of the hill above the Chasms. From here you walk down the asphalt road to Cregneash, a kind of open air museum with traditional crofts. You can walk through the village and have a look at the Manx Loaghtan sheep with the four horns. You can walk around the houses without a ticket, but if you want to go in, there is a fee. There is also a café here. After your visit you continue on to a public footpath taking you back to Port Erin via heath land. The views towards Port Erin and the hills in the background are great.
