Itinerary description
This is one of the two trails in santo antao that you cannot miss (the other being the cova - vila das pombas). It is incredibly beautiful and full of diverse landscapes. Unlike the cova hike, which is just a massive steep downhill (your legs and knees will hurt later), this is a continous of uphill, downhill, flat etc. so you have time to rest or change speed.
The trail begins in ponta do sol, a nice village on the seaside, and starts strong with a huge uphill where from the village you get to see a mountain landscape. After approximately 1 hour you get to Fontainhas, a pretty village (they say it's the best of cape verde!) where you can chill a bit at Bar Tchu and then continue the trail, or go back to Ponta do Sol.
we decided to continue up to Cruzinha. we had been told that from there on it would be 4.5 hours minimum but we took only 3 hours.
next stop is Formiguinhas (no bars open, buy your water for the rest of the day in Fontainhas) and then all the way to Cruzinha. the views are incredible as you walk along the coastline.
please do not swim at any point (even when the sea looks tempting) as the sea is extremely dangerous, do not get even close.
the last bit before Cruzinha is mostly flat. you would need to get a taxi once there, if you haven't arranged one before you can ask around in the village.
