Ponta do Sol - Cruzinha - Chã de Igreja - Pedracín

Quizá la ruta más escénica de las muchas que ofrece la isla de Santo Antão, la isla más occidental de África.

En realidad la ruta más común es simplemente entre Ponta do Sol y Cruzinha (aprox. 15km), pero yo aproveché para regresar hasta el hotel aprovechando otro camino que sale entre Cruzinha y Boca de Ambas as Ribeiras. Este camino no sólo añade 10km sino también remontar casi 600m verticales casi al final. De hecho, mi recomendación es que si quieren hacer la ruta completa, comiencen en el hotel y terminen en Ponta de Oro (donde podrán recogerlos). De esta forma harán la subida perfectamente fresco y a una hora donde el sol no sea factor.

Si bien no se sube una montaña muy alta, sí es un continuo sube y baja así que las piernas acabarán cansadas. De hecho, la subida desde Cha de Igreja es muy mortificante porque a pesar que comiences temprano, te tocará hacerla a las 12pm, con el sol encima.

La primer parte del trayecto es espectacular pues el camino va bordeando los acantilados del norte de la isla. Un pueblo es memorable, Fontainhas. Está al fondo de una de las cañadas que llegan al mar y rodeado de plantíos que dan la nota verde contrastante con la montaña árida. Está encajonado entre las montañas y con casas muy coquetas.

La he marcado como "difícil" no por el terreno ni por la distancia, sino por la suma de ambas. Una caminata de 27km no tendría problema, pero cuando cierra con una subida tan empinada, la hace más difícil de lo normal.

Esta ruta por algún motivo dejó de marcarse a partir de los 21km y falta el resto hasta el hotel Pedracín. La ruta completa (pero sin marcadores ni fotos puede verse con el id=10205803 Es esa la que mide 27km en lugar de los 21km marcados aquí.

Perhaps the most astonishing route among the plenty that can be found in Santo Antão island, the westernmost island in Africa.

To be honest, the most common routing is only from Ponta do Sol to Cruzinha (a mere 15kms. But I since I was doing a good timing, I decided to extend it all the way to my hotel (Pedracin Village) using the path from Cruzinha to Boca de Ambas as Ribeiras. This road adds not only 10 more kms but also the hike up to 600m vertically on the last stage of the road. This turns out to be very difficult as your body is very tired and suffering the effects of the midday sun. My recommendation is to do the route inverted, starting in the hotel and ending in Ponta do Sol (it is easy to have a transporte back to your stating point -easy and cheap-). Doing this, you will climb in the early stage in a time where sun is not a major factor.

Despite not being a high mountain, the road is a cotinous up and down along various cliffs, so your legs will end tired. As a matter of fact, the climb from Cha de Igreja is extremely tiring.

The first stage of the road is no less than perfect and spectacular as it borders huge cliffs ending directly in the sea. There is a fabolous town very close to the starging point, Fontainhas. It is on the far side of one of those huge canyons leading to the sea. It is surronded by amazing dry mountains and some green fields. Some of its houses are painted in bright colours and built over cliffs.

I have graded it as difficult (but not very difficult) no because of the terrain or the distance, but because of them added together. A hike of 27km would not be tat tiring, but when it almost ends with such a steep climb, then it becomes "difficult".
