Itinerary description
Largely unmarked route, we went by description from the book 15 most beautiful routes on Parnassos (Anavasi, book is in Greek), first half of the route is more or less easy to find, it follows a beautiful creek with remnants of hydroelectric plant. After you pass some villages it gets hard to find a continuation of the trail (you can see where track goes back and forth), once you find correct entrance to the forest it’s relatively ok, even though the signs from the guidebook are not so easy to find. At some point you need to go down to the creek and there is vegetation, but if you follow the track you’ll find a decent passage.
The next part is the worst though. Where you have to cross the creek bed and start going up on the opposite bank . The original trail most likely doesn’t exist anymore, there is a barely distinguishable beginning of it that matches guidebook description, but soon it gets lost and there is a lot of new growth conifer trees and oak bushes, which are dense. At times we would find what was probably a trail one day (the guidebook was published 6 years prior to our attempt on this route), but then again it would be grown over and we would be powering through the scratchy, very scratchy bushes. We were following general direction, that was clear from terrain, but it was uncertain and uncomfortable at times to be just wandering in undergrowth. I ventilated we reached top of the ridge and we not the open, following the descriptions from the guide book we crossed few meadows and finally saw a marked trail.
What a relief, just to follow red dots and a clear path.
Overall it’s a very beautiful route, moderately demanding physically, quite demanding mentally, as for most part you have to be looking for signs from guidebook description, it’s fun, until you can’t find next piece of puzzle and sun starts getting to close to horizon and then it’s no fun.
With this track recorded though it would be much easier to do the route, though you’ll still have to find your own way through the bushes.
