Itinerary description
Technical difficulty: 2/5
(circular trail / 2-days hike)
DAY 1: Podljubelj - Koča na Prevalu - Begunjščica (via Kalvarija) - Roblekov dom
(eng. Podljubelj - Lodge on Preval - Begunjščica (via Kalvarija) - Roblek's Lodge)
DAY 2: Roblekov dom - Koča na Zelenici - Podljubelj
(eng. Roblek's Lodge - Lodge on Zelenica - Podljubelj)
Note #1: This is a 2-days hike with a sleepover at Roblek's Lodge. This trail can certainly be completed in one day, but we didn't want to push it and decided to have a good night's rest at the Lodge.
Note #2: On the descent you can connect this trail with more peaks, such as Vrtača.
Note #3: Mobile reception is good throughout the trail, but it's best at the peak and at Roblek's Lodge.
Note #4: Parking at Podljublj is available on multiple parking lots: one is at the Kompas store, which is paid. We heard rumors that you CAN park there, freely, with no issues. The other is the official huge parking lot (unpaved) for ascents to Begunjščica and Lodge at Zelenica. This one is supposedly paid via an app that you need to download. The last one, where we parked, is not designated as a paid parking - but it's also the smallest. On weekends, it's bound to get populated fast.
Note #5: Shortly after the trailhead, there's a man-sized tunnel through the mountain. It's straight and not long, but a headlamp would be advisable as the ground can be uneven and/or wet with puddles of water.
Note #6: There are no streams with potable water on the trail.

- START DAY 1 -
The trail starts at the parking lot in Podljubelj, towards the Lodge on Preval (slo. Koča na Prevalu). We started on the so called Bornova pot (eng. Born's path). The path was made in 1894 at the order of baron Born, who supposedly wanted to have an easy access from Ljubelj village to his hunting grounds on the southern side of Begunjščica.
Shortly after the beginning of the hike, you will pass through a man-sized tunnel through the mountain. When you arrive at the Lodge on Preval, you can choose to continue on Born's path, or via the Kalvarija path. Born's path is longer but milder, while Kalvarija path is steeper, but shorter.
From Begunjščica the descent is pretty straightforward, but again steeper in some places, towards Roblek's Lodge. We took a rest here and slept over in the Lodge.
- END DAY 1 -
- START DAY 2 -
From Roblek's Lodge backtrack a bit upwards towards Begunjščica (Intersection #7), but then take a left this time and cross to the other side of the mountain, where a straightforward alpine trail will take you to the Lodge at Zelenica, and then further down back towards Podljubelj.
At Zelenica, you can choose to make a detour towards Vrtača (which will add about 7km to your trail overall), or some other smaller peak in the vicinity.
- END DAY 2 -
Waypoints
Parking (Podljubelj)
Three parking lots are available: 1. The one where we parked, paved, free. Limited space. 2. Kompas Shop parking lot. Paved. Officially only for customers of the shop, paid hourly after a fair-use limit for customers expires. We heard rumors that you can park freely nevertheless with no hassle. 3. Official parking lot for ascents to Begunjščica/Zelenica. Unpaved. Paid via an app that has to be downloaded on the spor. We didn't see any human validators or anything like that. Chances are you may park freely and get away with it. Park freely at spots 2 & 3 at your own risk.
Tunnel
Tunnel through the mountain, goes traight, a couple hundred meters long with an "open" spot at the halfway point.
Lodge at Preval (slo. Koča na Prevalu)
Lodge. Serves food and drinks. Choose to continue on Born's path, or to transfer to via Kalvarija towards Begunjščica.
Ridge
A ridge leading up to the Begunjščica peak; looks narrower from afar than it really is.
Monument to Primož Kampić (pilot & flight instructor)
The monument slate states that a certain Primož Kampić, flight instructor and pilot, crashed here and died in 1955 while paragliding. The slate was reared in his honor.
Begunjščica (2060 m)
The peak. When it's not foggy you should have a pretty nice 360° view. When it is foggy, like in our case... well, tough luck, right? :)
Intersection #7 / ro 'Roblekov dom'
You will return to this intersection on your return path from Roblek's Lodge, only you will go the other way to the other side of the mountain this time.
Roblek's Lodge (slo. Roblekov dom)
Roblek's Lodge. Offers sleepovers, food, drinks. Very nice views of the surrounding moutains and Bled lake.
Intersection #8 / go right
You can also continue on the same road you're on, but the "true" hiking way goes right.
Vrtača Lodge (not in use anymore)
The remains of the Vrtača Lodge and cable car station, situated by the ski slope Zelenica.
