Today we visit another of the National Parks of Croatia, the Plitvice Lakes, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. An impressive karst landscape that contains a set of 16 large lakes at different levels, interconnected by waterfalls and small streams and surrounded by a spectacular forest. Located near the border with Bosnia and Herzegovina, it was one of the main fighting sites during the Serbo-Croatian War. There was the first armed confrontation of the war that resulted in casualties, named "Plitvice's Bloody Easter." The loss of the park was a blow to Croatian national pride, but during Operation Storm in August 1995, control of the park was regained.
It is divided into two zones, the upper (Gornja jezera) and the lower (Donja jezera). We enter the part of Lake Kozjak, which connects the upper and lower lakes. There is the pier, to get on the electric boat that crosses the lake, we go up to go to the other shore. We start the route through the upper area, first we take the wooden path that borders Lake Grandisko. We arrive at the spectacular Veliki Pristavac waterfall. The appearance of the park is constantly changing as a result of the formation of pumice or travertine. The water dissolves the lime from the rocks that is deposited with the moss and algae forming barriers, caves and waterfalls; this causes the landscape to change over the years.
We continue the wooden path enjoying this spectacular landscape with numerous lakes, waterfalls and cavities. The colors of the lakes change from blue to green, depending on the amount of minerals or organisms in the water and the angle of sunlight.
We return to the pier along a path that goes through the middle of the forest, the nature is lush and it is only allowed to go through the authorized places. On a rainy day we found several salamanders along the way. We will find a viewpoint over the lakes that gives us a more extensive and panoramic view of the set of lakes. We cross Lake Kozjak with the electric boat, this time we take the long journey that takes us to P3 to visit the lower area. This part runs through a gorge and the wooden path that borders Lake Milanovac is practically in the air. In this part the waters are of a spectacular turquoise color that contrasts with the green of the vegetation and the white of the rocks. We pass near the entrance of the Spilja Supljar cave, a cave with stairs cut into the rock that goes up to the part, one of the most notable in the park, but is currently closed. We continue towards the largest waterfall in Croatia, the Veliki Slap.
As announced by the weather forecast for noon when it started to rain, this has meant that we are not much entertained during the visit. We are going to the bus that will take us to Zagreb earlier than planned, but we were able to do all the route we had planned.
