Itinerary description
This is the trail I did on my second day at Plitvice lakes. As I had already been there the day before, I skipped Veliki Slap waterfall, but if you haven't seen it, add that at the beginning of the hike.
I went up through the cave for great views. If you are going to end the day by taking the 'train' from ST3 to ST1 and then walk back to Entrance 1 and the P1 car park, then you actually don't need to do this. You will see the same view anyway.
I followed the 'K' trail on the far side of the lower lake called Kozjak. It was a very good idea. I recommend this. This trail is not crowded at all and very beautiful. I had already done the near side the day before, and I have to say I preferred this longer, quieter trail. It was more like a hike and less like a mass tourism experience. I was really by myself and could hear the birds singing and lizards scurrying. I saw five snakes - this isn't meant to put you off - there are always a lot of snakes when the weather first warms up. The point is I actually saw them, whereas on the other side of the lake there are too many people.
After that long section I rejoined the more popular paths and did the upper lakes, which was very nice. I ended at ST3 and took the 'train' back to ST1 and then walked the final km to the carpark at P1. I recorded that as a separate hike.
You really don't miss much by skipping the entrance 2 area and the short boat ride - and it is easy to amend my hike and fit that in anyway.
I would recommend this route (including Veliki Slap waterfall), if you only have one day at the park. It's a nice mix of the main sights and some feeling of doing an actual hike.
Enjoy!
