Itinerary description
This hike goes from Plesio up to Rifugio Menaggio, and part of the way up to Monte Grona. We didn't make it all the way to the top. The last stretch would have been a steep climb of 300m up over 800m of hiking.
The trail starts through some small villages, often along the main car road (with no pavement). After a while you get to the forest, and most of the path up to the rifugio is shaded. The ascent is steep and demanding, but never technically difficult until the rifugio. There are plenty of water sources along the way to refill your canteen.
After you pass the rifugio, you're out in the open, and hiking on bare rock and gravel. There are three ways up: the via normale, which should be the easiest; the via diretissimo, which we attempted but which was very challenging and required scrambling on all fours; and the via panoramico, which takes the long way around, but still seemed strenuous.
In the stretch after the rifugio my GPS had some problems tracking the route, but the path was well-marked and easy to find. In total we climbed some 900m over a stretch of 7km or so, and the same on the way back. The views over lake Como were spectacular, and well worth the effort.
