Itinerary description
Technical difficulty: 1.5/5
Note #1: At Intersection #5 you get to choose which way you'll approach Snježnik peak - "Kroz grlo" (literally, eng. "through the throat", aka through the gorge) or "Preko grebena" ("over the ridge"). Both approaches are nice and similar in topography, so it's just a matter of preference. Whichever you choose, you'll go over the other approach on your return-trip.
Note #2: Since Snježnik is surrounded by other peaks, this trail can be lengthened quite a bit if you're feeling adventurous. For example, once you reach Snježnik you can continue towards the prominent Risnjak peak (one of the best-known peaks in the Gorski Kotar region).
Note #3: The majority of the trail is shaded, so it's suitable to do even in the summer months. However, bring enough water because there aren't any natural drinking spots in the area.
Note #4: The area of Gorski Kotar is known to be a tick habitat. Be sure to check yourself for ticks after you finish the hike!

This is a circular trail, starting from the most famous picnic area and ski resort in the region - Platak. It starts at the north-eastern end of the huge parking lot (parking is free of charge), and follows up a well-marked carriage road. This road can be cut short by going through the woods in some places. These shortcuts are also clearly marked.
Around Intersection #5, the carriage road gives way to a more forresty trail, preceding the immediate ascent to the Snježnik peak. At Snježnik, take a moment to enjoy the beautiful view of the Kvarner bay to the south, and the surrounding mountains of Croatia and Slovenia to the west, north and east. The peak could be quite windy, no matter the season.
The return-trip will take you back to Intersection #5, where you'll continue on the same path back to the Platak parking lot.
Waypoints
Intersection #4 / to 'Snježnik'
Follow the sign that points to "Snježnik"
Intersection #5 / choose which approach to Snježnik to take
Decide which approach you want to take: 1. Kroz grlo (eng. through the throat aka gorge) 2. Preko grebena (eng. over the ridge)
Intersection #6 / to Snježnik or Guslica peak
From this intersection you can make a detour to the nearby Guslica peak.
Memorial to Branko Lončar / ruins of 'Snježnik' mountain lodge
On the rock-face there is a memorial plaque to Branko Lončar, a famed local mountaineer and founder of the mountaineering club "Platak". A short distance away there are the remains of the old mountain lodge on Snježnik. Built in 1951, and fallen into complete disrepair in the early 2000s, it hasn't been used since. There have been talk about reconstruction and restoration, but nothing has come to fruition as of yet.
Snježnik (1505 m)
Snježnik peak, resting at an altitude of around 1505 meters above sea level. The views are beautiful in all directions: you can see the islands in the Kvarner bay to the south, and the surrounding peaks in all the other directions. The most prominent is Risnjak, a rocky peak to the west (easily recognizable because of the mountain lodge just beneath it).
