Planina pod Šumikon. (Šumik Waterfalls Route). Pragozd Šumik. Slap Veliki Šumik. Potoc Verna Slap Mali Šumik. Very short route to see the waterfalls of the recently born Lobnjca river. Its birth in Lake Crno Jezero (Black Lake). It is possible to combine the two excursions since it is only 6 km to the Black Lake, but we did them separately. At the starting point we reach the Planina pod Šumikon dirt track, which is in very good condition. We leave the car in the parking lot which is in front of an area where camping is allowed (this is marked on the map) and on the other side we find the sign that marks the beginning of the path. The path is well marked and signposted with the typical red and white circle of the country and also with red stripes. It's not a difficult path, but it has its quirks, which is why I've marked it as moderate. You need to wear good shoes that don't slip and have some experience on mountain routes. We begin to follow the course of the Lobnjca river which is still a stream that meanders down a small valley between huge pine trees and stones full of moss. We will find a bridge to cross and we will still follow a flat piece with log bridges to pass brooks and streams. Soon the path begins to descend and we will have to make small easy climbs along which we will find pegs, steps and lifelines. Nothing very difficult but we will have to wear good shoes and be careful as there are many roots and the path is quite wet.
We find the first jump that has no name. Next to the first waterfall. Slap Veliki Šumik. Impressive!!! Nothing to do with the quiet stream at the beginning. We continue down the side of the river and a little further down we will use a cable to pass the first major obstacle, a waterfall and a rather large stream. One poster calls it Protok Verna. About 10 minutes later we find a bridge that we should cross to get to the other side but that the recent floods have destroyed. We try but there is a lot of water coming down and we have a long way to go to the end, we would have to get into the river and today the current is strong and safety comes first. So we continue a little downstream along the same corner but now without a path until we reach the second large waterfall that does not allow us to go down and that we can see from above. Anyway magnificent. Let's go back the way we came down.
Despite the final problem, the excursion is well worth it. The forests of this virgin area are impressive and we play with the fact of an entertaining and varied path, some spectacular waterfalls and the possibility of finding a brown bear, inhabitants of these forests.
I hope you like it and if you do I would like you to leave a comment to tell me what you thought and if any changes need to be made. Health and legs!!
