Itinerary description

The Xaxa trail is a route that connects the high zones of the park with the low zones situated in the bottom of the Pincipal canyon, covering the entire Xaxa canyon and part of the end of the Gongon canyon. Along the beginning of the trail, numerous views open up to visitors, but the views to the north, the eastern coast of Santiago and on clear days the island of Maio dominate the selection. After about 1.5 hours the trail enters the beautiful community of Xaxa: small groups of traditional houses with typical architecture, grouped together on the sides of the canyon, inserted harmoniously into the magnificent landscape. The route continues the descent into the greenery of the beautiful canyon, where various fruit plants everywhere, banana trees, coconut trees, papaya trees and sugar cane. In the time it takes to walk the trail it is possible to observe the day to day people that live this rural area. At the end of the Xaxa canyon there is a distillory and traditional“trapiche”(still operated by oxen) and a furnace connected to the still for the distillation of the national alcohol, Grogue, and the production of honey from sugar cane. In the last section, where the Xaxa and Gongon canyons meet, the trail runs along the bottom of the canyon and passes in through fruit trees and sugar cane until the canyon meets with the Principal canyon in the village of Hortelão.

Could not find the path. The upper section is still there including marked stones along the way. But as soon as you reach the plateau the path looses itself in a field. People working the fields nearby told me its impassable.
