Itinerary description
This trail cuts in the West-East direction through the eastern section of the park. From this trail various intersections give access to other zones of the protected area and the typical villages of Xaxa and Gongon. The entire trail follows a mostly flat surface, in the heights of the Serra Malagueta massif, offering magnificent views of the plateau of Assomoada, the canyon of Principal, Flamengos, and on days of clear visibility, all the way to the islands of Fogo and Maio. The route unwinds into the interior of a forest that is sometimes dense and sometimes open, formed of exotic trees (a result of the reforestation that occurred after 1928 in order to combat erosion, to recharge aquifers, and to provide firewood resources for the local populations). Along the entire way it is possible to see various endemic plants and animals, with the highlight of some bird species in danger of extinction, as well as some introduced, but fascinating species, like the monkeys (Cercopithecus aethiops).
