Itinerary description

It is a route to the highest peak in Mauritius - Piton de la Petite Rivière Noire (Black River Peak) 828m. The trail is easy since it starts at a high elevation, but I still mark it as moderate for the following reasons
1. at the end you will have to climb a steep slope with help of an attached rope. It can be challenging for people who are new to hiking.
2. the trail can be very muddy which will make you watch each step.

From the top, you will enjoy excellent views of Le Morne Brabant Mt., Tamarin Mt., and the gorge, along with the west coast. The trail is wide, well worn, and does not have any branching. Still, I recommend using my recorded GPS to follow the progress. The whole way is shaded.

In my case, it took about 1.5h one way to reach the top walking non-stop, but the trail was extremely muddy. Hopefully you will have better luck. Also it should be noted that there is no any view before you reach the top at the end. You will walk through the woods till the end.

Parking location coordinates: -20.423526, 57.427396. It is a small parking space. If it is fully occupied, park in the Gorges viewpoint parking at -20.424517, 57.429626, and walk a bit. I also believe the second location is more secure since there are many people there. Any car can reach the parking.

Must-have gear:
1) Hiking shoes
2) about 2 liters of water depending on the season
3) mosquito repellent

I also recommend to have extra shoes, socks and pants in your car to change after this muddy adventure.

I am very beginner hiker and this trail can be considered as easy hike except the very end - which you can do with the help of rope. Also, it is very easy to follow this trail! Since it has been showering over a week (or maybe it is normal for this trail), more than 50% of trail was very muddy. So if you are going for this hike, be ready to be covered with mud on your shoes and probably some parts of your pants.
You don’t really have any view till the summit but I liked it didn’t have much elevation :D

Amazing hike with breathtaking views from the top. There are few places along the way with nice views. We were lucky as it wasn’t super muddy after 2 dry days. Go for it!

It was not muddy when I went so it was an easy hike, took only 2 hours with an extra 15 minutes at the top. Please wear bug spray cause there are a lot of bugs. Most of it is a forest walk with not a lot of views, but the view at the top is stunning. You could start the hike from the parking lot at the gorge view point as well, which is super pretty as well. The last part got some ropes to help you up, a bit tricky but fun! Wear proper shoes! Thanks Anton for another great hike 😀.
