Thanks for your post. The spelling should Pipiwai, This is a popular hike in Haleakala National Park.
I started looking into the meaning of the name and found no certain answer with lots of intriguing possibilities. The Place Names of Hawaii Dictionary says it means, "sparkling water". But "pipi" clearly doesn't mean "sparkling" and, in fact, this reference refers to a place on Molokai. Usually "pipi" refers to cows here, so there's that, or it can mean "oyster". Or, more likely, Pipiwai means Eleocharis erythropoda, a native sedge. Well, that's probably it, but I've never done this hike.
