Itinerary description

A trail for equestrians and hikers. (no bikes are allowed on this section). Because of its length, this upper part of the trail is more frequented by equesterians than hikers. However, on the cardiac hill section itself you find find runners everyday of the week. It is popular for training steep elevation changes. For Rattlesnack bar to Avery pond there are many families and dayhikers. The 2 mile round trip from the Rattlesnake parking area to Avery Pond is a nice diversion- wildflowers in spring, fall colors in fall.

This is part of a 54 mile trail from Auburn down to Discovery park in Sacramento. It also is part of the American Discovery park and the Western State trail. This section is not used by the Western state race.

Cardiac hill Gate - This is one place to park, but only has space for about 3 cars. There is more parking at the China bar parking a little ways down Maidu Dr. For an extra 2 miles (or if you need parking for horse trailer), there is parking at the "dam overlook" off of Sacramento street. If you park at the "dam overlook" you will find the signs to get you to Pioneer Express trail may be missing. It is easier to follow the trail from Maidu Dr.
