Itinerary description
Starting at the southern terminus there are several segments of trail and road walk to the Trammel trailhead. From Trammel there is almost 150 miles of forest covered mountain ridge trail to the town of Cave Spring.
There is then 17 miles of road to the Simms Rail Trail (simms-mountain-rail-trail) which is 11 miles long. There is a short trail to High Point TH and the start of a 20 mile segment of forest covered ridge trail, a short road walk (2+ miles) with 16 more miles of forest, another segment of road (1+ miles) and 21+ more miles of forest. After The Dug Mountain Scenic Overlook is 23+ miles of road (some of which is 60 mph after Dalton, GA). From Dennis Mill trailhead there is 14+ miles of forest, a short piece of road (0.5 miles), another 3.5 miles of forest, another 1+ mile of road and then 17.5 miles to the northern terminus.
From the terminus you can go north on the South Fork Trail less than 1 mile to Jacks River, North ~2miles to Watson Gap (FSR 64 x FSR 1) on the Benton Mackaye Trail (bmt-segment-9a-10a-dyer-gap-to-jacks-river-trail
