Itinerary description
Round trip day hike of the Pikes Peak Barr Trail - For some reason the elevation data in the file got messed up and read zero for most of the hike. Wikiloc is truncating the mileage a bit, the raw GPS data puts it at 24.4 miles.
The round trip day hike is quite challenging, even if you are in great shape with a lot of experience. Compared to this hike Half Dome is a walk in the park, and the Grand Canyon is just another difficult day hike. Most people arranged for a ride down from the top. As soon as we got to the parking lot and I realized I wasn't going to have to call for a copter my legs pretty much stopped working, although we had let our training slip for a couple months before this hike due to a move.
The trail is quite easy to follow, even above the tree line. The only place where you have to be careful is near the bottom, another trail comes in from the left and the junction is not signed. This is where the marathon trail joins the main Barr trail, just go to the right. There is water that can be filtered at Barr camp, about half way up and you can either get water from the bathroom or the fountain at the summit house.
