Malyovitsa peak and hut. Lake Elensko. Allen Mak. Rila NP. Bulgaria

The Rila National Park is the largest in Bulgaria, with an area of 810.46 km² in the Rila mountain range, in the southwest of the country. It was established on February 24, 1992 to protect several ecosystems of national importance. Its altitude varies from 800 m. near Blagoevgrad at 2925 m. on Musala Peak, the highest peak on the Balkan Peninsula. There are 120 glacial lakes, including the well-known seven Rila lakes. Many rivers originate in the national park, including the longest river that flows entirely through the Balkans, the Maritsa, and the longest river that flows entirely through Bulgaria, the Iskar.

It is made up of a series of deep valleys and glacial lakes located just 70 km south of Sofia. The park is divided into two sectors. The eastern, where you can find Mount Musala (2,925m), the highest peak in the Balkans; or the Borovets ski slopes. And the western one, with the Rila Monastery and the famous circuit of the Seven Lakes.

The national park covers territories of 4 of the 28 provinces of the country: Sofia, Kyustendil, Blagoevgrad and Pazardzhik. It includes four nature reserves: Parangalitsa, Central Rila Reserve, Ibar and Skakavitsa.

Two of the four nature reserves are included in the UN List of Represented Protected Areas, and four of the nature reserves are included in the World Network of Biosphere Reserves under the UNESCO Man and the Biosphere Program .

The park lies within the Rhodope Mountains mixed forest terrestrial ecoregion. Forests occupy 66% of the total area. There are approximately 1,400 species of vascular plants, 282 species of mosses, and 130 species of freshwater algae. The fauna is represented by 48 species of mammals, 99 species of birds, 20 species of reptiles and amphibians, and 5 species of fish, as well as 2,934 species of invertebrates, of which 282 are endemic.

Ascent to Malyovitsa, one of the most important peaks of the Rila massif. In order to ascend to this peak, you must go to the small ski resort of Malyovitsa, a small resort with a family atmosphere and where Nordic skiing is practiced.

Once we have crossed the entrance arch to the Rila National Park, we go up the side of a river until we reach Malyovitsa Hut, a brief stop to eat something, have a drink or go to the toilet. From here the path becomes more tiring, as you have to ascend, with small flat sections, to where we find a large rock, all of it full of commemorative plaques of different Bulgarian climbers who died, either in Bulgaria or in other parts of the world. .

We continue the ascent to the Elenino Ezero lake, further on we must face the hard ramps that we need to reach the pass. We are at 2,500 meters and we still have two hundred meters to climb.

Once these ramps have been overcome, we access a col that gives us some impressive views: on the other side you can see the Rila Valley and the famous monastery. We now continue through a flatter area that will allow us to reach the Malyovitsa peak (2,729 m high.). From there you can see the Musala, the Rila Valley, Mount Vistosha, the Pirin Mountains, the Ring, etc.

We descend along the same path until we reach the starting point of the route.
