Itinerary description
Pico Ruivo is the highest point on the volcanic island of Madeira at 1862 m(6109 ft). It is a popular hiking destination. The most popular route is the challenging hike from Pico Arieiro. The moderate route is the hike from Achada do Texeira at 1590 m, accessible by road from Santana. From the parking lot to the summit is 2.8 km and an altitude gain of about 300 m, 1000 ft. The track is wide and paved with stone. There are several shelters and a government rest house for refreshments.
Pico Ruivo is often shrouded with clouds. Choose a clear day and start early to avoid being enveloped by clouds. The protective railings at the summit were destroyed in the devastating fires in August 2010.
