Itinerary description

Anti clockwise circuit to Pico Grande from Faja dos Cardos - rise through the forest to join the ridge (PR1.3) heading west towards Casado, before dropping down to link across and upto Pico Grande on a superb little used path. Return to Faja Escura in the Nun's Valley and then a short road section uphill back to Faja dos Cardos.

    incrível caminhada.
subida de fajã dos cardos de 900 metros.
o tempo para nós foi o dobro..
o tracejado por vezes é em linha recta o que deixa a entender que houve paragem na gravação.

Fantastic route. Best and hardest hike I accomplished on Madeira.

We did this route clockwise. Our statistics show 1334 total elevation gain / loss, which I think is more accurate than the 1883 shown here. Still, very challenging with the elevation change.

On the back side of the ridge between Pico Grande and the 1.3 trail, there are some steep sections that may be wet / slippery.

Bring lots of water. I brought 2.2 liters and ran out at the end.

Everything was spectacular. We got clear views of the ocean on both the north and south sides. We were lucky to see a sun halo. And the wildflowers all around, especially on the back side of the trail, are beautiful.
