Itinerary description
Head out on this 9.2-km point-to-point trail near Porto da Cruz, Madeira. Generally considered a challenging route, it takes an average of 4 h 55 min to complete. This trail is great for backpacking, hiking, and walking.
• PARTIAL CLOSURE: Part of this route on the east road of PR1 is temporarily inaccessible, but you can still enjoy part of this trail following the western road (Percurso Vereda Oeste). For more information, visit https://www.summitpost.org/pico-ruivo/152283
This trail follows the eastern track of PR1, which can be closed. In the case of find the eastern route of PR1 blocked, you can take the western track (Percurso Vereda Oeste) instead.
This is probably the best hike on the whole island and also the most popular. An early start is recommended as on Madeira the high mountains are free of cloud. The cloud seems to gather on the tops around early afternoon.
There are no buses to the start and it is best done as a one-way walk and to that end, transport is required from Teixeira. Taxi is the best way, the drivers will drop you off at the start and will arrange a time to pick you up at the end (on your way back they will stop at several places of interest). There are several companies that offer both transport and a guide but to be honest a guide is not needed as the path is straightforward. Allow 5 hours.
