Itinerary description
Start and return at the Falzarego parking.
Beautiful and adventurous tour through the WW1 fortifications and tunnels.
Section 1 - ascent to the rifugio Lagazuoi gives stunning views of the trenches and fortifications. The trail itself is moderately difficult. One part has a via Ferrata with cables but not too hard. We chose to rent the security girdles at the base station but discovered that they are not needed if you are an expert hiker. If you have fear of heights then maybe reconsider :-)
The provided a good lunch after which we descended through the tunnel systems. We took every side tunnel we encountered and literally walked in circles a couple of times. The WW1 tunnel system is immense and the signs describe the situation very well. I advise to take ample time to visit the tunnels; we took about 2 hours until we made the final (easy) descent via the regular path.
While the tunnels are easy to navigate and traverse, a helmet and headlight are must-haves. I bumped my helmet at least 5 times.
The helmet and headlights we also rented at the base station.
My son of 18 was very impressed and excited (and so were my wife and i)
