THE HUNDRED THOUSAND SONGS OF MILAREPA
Pray send forth your rays of light
To shine o'er the Wisdom-lotus
In the hearts of your disciples,
And make them blossom.
Pray make the anthers
Of the Four Infinities grow today.
I have something to ask you
Lovely maidens sitting on my left.
There is nothing special I want to know-
Just tell me, are you human beings,
Or heavenly angels?
For this is the first time I have seen you.
Oh you five attractive damsels
With such fine and charming bodies,
In the dazzling light of magic
Your enchanting elegance
Glorifies the splendor of your beauty!
Oh you radiant maids from Heaven,
He who sees you at a distance seems
As in a dim evening fog to see five
Young maidens shopping in the town.
But when he looks more carefully,
He sees no tangible or steady image,
Only a hazy, flickering silhouette.
Thus am I much bewildered and perplexed.
When I venture on the road,
I see you run like rolling pearls,
Chatting gaily with much laughter.
But behind your coquettish charms and glamor,
Like the morning star shining in the east
You slowly fade away.
Seeing that you disperse and assemble e'er in groups,
I suspect that you are Devas or else fairies.
When one looks at your eyes a'twinkle,
One cannot help but smile!
I wonder to myself, "are you magic :Oakinis?"
The Buddhist way of circling in obeisanc
Is from left to right,
But yours from right to left,
So you must Devas be, or fairies.
The usual way to render "Eye Obeisance" 6
Is from left to right,
But yours from right to left,
So you must fairies be, or Devas.
You shake the upper body when you bow;
In every nine prostrations you ask of my welfare thrice;
You nod and shake your heads
When you make the "Eye Obeisance" once;
Only heavenly ladies prostrate in such a way,
But though you imitate, you are not really like them!
In every eight prostrations you ask of my welfare twice
After the fashion of all Devas;
You bend your knees to earth -
The form of your obeisance is unusual.
This spoon that's made with gems of blue
With various jewel ornaments that you gave me,
From Heaven came:. it is not of this world.
I come from a distant country,
And have traveled in many different lands.
I have eaten many sorts of food
And many wondrous things have I seen and heard.
Compared to others, my experience should be not less,
but more;
But in all my life I have never tasted
Such delicious yogurt made from wild ox milk,
Nor have I ever seen such wondrous things.
This is food from Heaven,
It is not of this world.
What you have said, oh happy fairies,
Is indeed a cause for wonder,
Especially your request to know the Bodhi-Mind.
Judging by your faith and fondness for the Dharma,
In past lives you must have had
Deep affiliation with the Doctrine.
